How Chin Implants can Improve Your Nose Job

chin-implant-nose-jobAre you seeking surgery to correct an overly prominent nose? If your focus is solely on this feature, you may not get the fully satisfying result you are hoping for. In some cases, the nose is not the only feature that is out of proportion with the rest of the face. For some patients, combining a nose job with chin augmentation offers more dramatic – and more satisfying – results overall.

Factors that Impact the Appearance of the Nose

The nose may be the central feature of the face, but it does not stand alone in terms of its size, shape or proportion. Other features that might affect the appearance of the nose include:

  • The distance between your eyes
  • The size, position and shape of the cheekbones
  • The size and projection of the lips
  • The size and profile of the chin

In fact, the chin profile is likely to have the most profound impact on the proportion of your nose. If you have a chin that is weak or recessed, your nose will probably appear even more prominent than it already is. By adjusting the profile of both the nose and the chin simultaneously, your plastic surgeon is likely to achieve much better balance and proportion in your facial profile than if only one of those procedures is performed at a time.

About Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty or nose reshaping surgery is used to change the size or shape of the nose. It can also be used to correct asymmetries and to create a more attractive facial profile. The procedure can be customized to the unique needs and desired results of each patient. Some of the specific concerns rhinoplasty can address include:

  • A nose that is too big or small for the rest of the face
  • A hump or concave on the nasal bridge
  • A nasal tip that is too pointed, round or points downward
  • Nostrils that are too wide or asymmetrical
  • A crooked septum that affects the appearance or the function of the nose

Rhinoplasty is typically performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. While there does tend to be a significant amount of swelling and bruising after this surgery, most of our patients are back to regular activities within a couple of weeks. Results of rhinoplasty are permanent.

About Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation is frequently performed by inserting a synthetic implant into the chin tissue on top of the bone to create a more defined facial profile along the jawline. The incision to place the implant is often made inside the mouth so that there will be no visible scarring after the surgery. An incision may also be required underneath the chin, but this incision is typically too small to leave much scarring behind. When more dramatic correction is required, the augmentation may be done by advancing the chin bone to create a stronger lower face shape. This procedure tends to involve more discomfort and a longer recovery process. However, the results can also be much more dramatic.

Benefits of Combining Procedures

There are a number of potential benefits in performing chin augmentation at the same time as your rhinoplasty:

  • Only one time under anesthesia
  • Just one recovery process to heal from both procedures
  • Better balance when procedures are performed together
  • Full results without the need for a second procedure later on

If you are unhappy with the look of your nose, the surgeons at Institute of Plastic Surgery can assess your concerns to determine whether rhinoplasty alone will meet your goals or if a combination of rhinoplasty and chin augmentation will offer better results. To learn more, contact us today!
