Circumferential body lift, or also known occasionally as lower body lift, is a procedure meant to tighten the excess skin and fat around the lower torso. This is a particularly significant problem for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight, either through diet and exercise, or through a gastric bypass procedure.

The procedure's done first by removing the excess skin of the front portion of the abdomen. That incision is then carried on to the sides as well as the back. The procedure is done under general anesthesia and patients are usually asked to stay overnight because of the extensive nature of the procedure. And what I mean by overnight is this procedure is done at the surgical center that we do most of our surgeries at, they usually stay overnight for one night. After that they go home the next day and then we see them back in follow up in the office soon afterwards.

When evaluating one of these patients you want to see how much excess skin they have, if there's excess fat, if there's a combination of the two. We also want to see where that excess skin is, whether it's in the front part of the abdomen. If so, then perhaps they're a better candidate for just a tummy tuck. With a circumferential body lift, these patients typically have excess skin both of the front, the sides and the back of the abdomen.

The results after surgery will last many, many years, assuming the patient doesn't gain or lose a significant amount of weight afterwards. That's why it's important to be at a baseline weight level before proceeding with the surgery.

The next step for someone interested in the procedure is to call our office and set up an appointment with either myself or Dr. Dash and we'd be happy to do a free consultation to evaluate the situation for you.
