Am I a Candidate for Breast Reduction?

Breast procedures are often performed to add size and fullness to the breasts, but this is not the goal of all women. Some are wishing to actually reduce the size of disproportionately large breasts that might be causing them physical pain and well as psychological embarrassment. If you are concerned about the size of your breasts or experiencing symptoms as the result of their size and weight, the staff at the Institute of Plastic Surgery can help. Answer these questions to help you determine whether breast reduction is the right procedure for you.

Are you unhappy with your appearance?

The first factor that often drives women to a plastic surgeon for breast reduction is dissatisfaction with their appearance. They do not feel their body contour are proportional and they are often embarrassed by the size of their breasts. For these women, breast reduction can improve the appearance as well as self-confidence levels.

Do you have trouble getting clothing to fit?

When the breasts are disproportionately large compared to the rest of the body, it can be difficult to find clothing that fits properly. For example, you may find a dress that fits properly around the waist and hips but is too tight in the bodice. You may be self-conscious wearing low-cut shirts or even bathing suits because of the unwanted attention you receive.

Do you experience back, shoulder or neck pain?

Women with very large breasts may find the extra weight in the front puts excessive pressure on the back, shoulders and neck. These women may face chronic tension and pain in the upper back area simply due to supporting the breasts all day long. Women may also experience frequent headaches as a result of the increased pressure, which can affect their productivity and their quality of life.

Are your large breasts causing skin problems?

Another common problem for women with large breasts is indentations or even cuts into the skin at the shoulders from overstressed bra straps. In addition, heavy breasts can cause friction underneath the breast, resulting in skin irritation and even recurrent infections. These issues can be both painful and difficult to treat, prompting many women to seek a more permanent solution.

Are your activities limited due to the size of your breasts?

Large breasts can do more than cause you embarrassment and pain. They can also keep you from participating in some of the activities you love. If certain sports or activities are no longer comfortable for you, breast reduction may be a solution. Decreasing the size of your breasts might allow you to enjoy running, weightlifting and swimming once again, improving your fitness level and your quality of life.  Although some insurance companies may cover some of the cost of breast reduction surgery, the Institute of Plastic Surgery no longer accepts insurance for this procedure.  During your consultation the office staff will usually take photos and provide you with an quote for the cost of the surgery. Breast reduction is an outpatient procedure in most cases that offers a myriad of benefits to those seeking this surgery.
