Liposuction - Colorado Springs Institute of Plastic Surgery
Video Transcript
Liposuction is a surgery in which, excess fat is removed from a specific area so the body, in order to slim or recontour those areas. So, patients with specific pockets of fat in their body, that they would like to have removed. And patients with good skin elasticity are the best candidates for liposuction. Patients who have poor skin elasticity and patients who are generally, obese are not good candidates for liposuction.
To perform liposuction, we make small incisions. They are usually less than a centimeter in size and through those incisions, we infiltrate fluid. The fluid helps to break up the fat. It also gives a little bit of local anesthesia and it has some epinephrine in it which, closes down some blood vessels. And then, we use suction assisted liposuction in order to remove the fat and in some areas of the body, in some cases, we'll use ultrasound in order to remove the fat.
Post-operatively, liposuction patients are in a compression garment which, is like a girdle. And that is done in order to aid in decreasing the swelling and also, to help with improving their skin elasticity after the procedure. They're usually sore for about five to seven days and then, they can return to work. And they're usually off of narcotics between one to two weeks, depending on the areas that we've performed surgery on.
A patient who's considering liposuction surgery, should consider two things. They should have only certain areas or pockets of fat that they are trying to improve. And they should have good skin elasticity.
If a patient is interested in liposuction surgery, they can contact the Institute of Plastic Surgery and receive a free consultation by myself or with Doctor Jain.
