Increase in Silicone Breast Augmentation Usage Trend

Increased use of Silicone Breast Implants since 2006

After the FDA removed silicone breast implants from the market in 1992, they conducted a broad study to learn more about the safety of silicone breast implants.  In 2006 the FDA re-released silicone implants in the United States for use by plastic surgeons after coming to the conclusion that silicone implants do not pose any danger or threat to patients.

In 2006 the percentage of patients undergoing breast augmentation with silicone implants was 19%.  In 2012, the number of patients using silicone for their breast augmentation rose to 72% while saline dropped to 28%.

The data reflects an overwhelming favorability of silicone implants over saline implants by both plastic surgeons and patients.  Most surgeons feel that silicone implants look and feel more natural than saline implants.
