About Liposuction
Reshaping the contours of your body with surgical liposuction is a skill our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Krishna S. Dash, have honed throughout years. If you would like to effectively eliminate fat in specific areas of the body (such as the thighs, back, upper arms, buttocks, neck, abdomen, and more), we can offer our services at The Institute of Plastic Surgery. Lipo, or liposuction, is a body contouring treatment that removes pockets of fat to create a more defined appearance. This cosmetic procedure at our Colorado Springs, CO office can be combined with other surgeries and performed on multiple body parts. When you see Dr. Dash for your plastic surgery consultation, our team will assess your trouble spots, ask questions about your medical history, take before pictures of the area, and get to know more about your lifestyle. With all of this information, we will help you achieve your aesthetic goals by developing a treatment plan to fit your needs. We want to help you feel and look your best.

Ideal Candidates
Fat removal surgery is a great treatment for patients who are at an ideal weight but have stubborn pockets of fat that cannot be lost with diet alone. Patients considering liposuction should have good skin laxity because liposuction is not a treatment for loose skin. It's also important to understand that liposuction is not a treatment for weight loss. Females undergoing liposuction should have childbearing behind them as this may compromise the outcome. At the time of your consult for surgery, we will discuss honest expectations.
Surgical Technique
Liposuction is completed in an outpatient setting under general anesthesia. A punch-hole incision is placed through the skin so a cannula can be inserted through the incision. The cannula is a tool that makes it easier to work loose the fatty tissue that is being suctioned out. After the desired amount of fat deposits have been removed, our surgeon will seal the small incision. Based on the number of sections treated, your procedure may take several hours. In the separate area for recovery, your post-operation nurse will assist you with managing your pain and look after your incision site until you are discharged.
What to Expect
You may be in recovery at home from liposuction for several weeks based on the number of treatments performed and the amount of fat removed. It's typical to have bruising and swelling for one or two weeks, and you can have any stitches taken out 7 – 10 days after surgery. The most important thing to do following liposuction is to give your body time to rest and heal. Once you go back to your job after your surgery, you should do your best to take it easy. To increase your strength and stamina, try light workouts and go for walks as approved by your surgeon. Keep in mind you may see some improvements soon after your surgery, but it will take around 6 – 10 months until your new body contour and shape is complete.
Liposuction FAQs
How Much Will I Lose?
First and foremost, liposuction is not a tool for weight loss. The amount of fat removed really depends on the size of the patient and his or her aesthetic goals. It is highly recommended to not have more than ten pounds of fat taken at one time. High-volume liposuction presents an increased set of risks. Remember, all surgical procedures carry risks. If you are not at a stable weight you can easily maintain, your surgeon may recommend losing the weight first to make sure you can maintain it. You will want to be at your ideal weight so that the liposuction by Drs. Dash or Jain accentuates your body nicely.
How Long will Lipo last?
The good news is that the fat cells taken during a liposuction procedure will not return. If you regain the weight, there are still fat cells in your body that can become enlarged. If you do not adhere to a healthy diet, decrease the amount you exercise, your weight may change. Gaining weight will disrupt the results of your liposuction procedure. If you follow a consistent diet and exercise program, you should continue to see results for many years after surgery.
Can I Combine Procedures?
Yes. Liposuction is very versatile and safe to combine with other procedures. You can also have liposuction in several different areas during the same surgery. Ultimately, each patient will have a detailed treatment plan according to the surgeon's recommendation. Let us know if you have questions or concerns about adding lipo to a procedure.
Will I Have Loose Skin?
It is a possibility. Liposuction is a surgery that only removes fat to improve that shape of your body. If you already have loose skin, it will not be corrected with liposuction. This fat removal technique does not address skin imperfections like sagging skin or cellulite under the skin. At the consultation appointment, you can discuss your concerns about skin laxity once the fat is removed. A skin removal surgery may be recommended such as a tummy tuck, thigh lift, neck lift, or lower body lift surgeries.
